Bartlett wrote in Early Music Review 114:36 (August

heard. The singing is accurate, in tune, spirited, musical and
utterly delightful, and doesn't get out of scale, despite the
dramatic nature of the music . . . . There is also some
incredibly beautiful playing . . . . . The excellent booklet
notes are by Elisabeth Scholl herself, who also translated them

edited the music."

CDs), September 2003. René Jacobs, Akademie für Alte Musik
Berlin. Griselda: Dorothea Röschmann, soprano; Costanza:
Verónica Cangemi, soprano; Gualtiero: Lawrence Zazzo,
countertenor; Ottone: Bernarda Fink, mezzo-soprano; Roberto:
Silvia Tro Santafé, contralto; Corrado: Kobie van Rensburg,
tenor. Scarlatti's last surviving opera, and according to
Daniel
Heartz, his best. Hasse copied several arias and attempted
to smooth out the phrasing and simplify the harmony. (Reproduced
in
Strohm 1975). The all-male cast at the first known public
performance included the famous castrati Bernacchi (as
Gualtiero) and
Carestini, for whom Scarlatti extensively revised and
expanded Costanza's music. Reviewed by Anthony Hicks in Early
Music Review 96:18-19 (December 2003): "Jacobs' general
respect for Scarlatti's score here is in marked contrast to his
recent treatment of Handel's Rinaldo. . . . There are
several cuts, including nine of the arias in the main text of
Donald Grout's Harvard edition and a good deal of recitative,
but these are excusable, given the exceptional length of the
opera, and Jacobs adds back two items deleted by Scarlatti
before performance, an orchestral movement and Corrado's aria
'Non lasciar' in Act I, the latter being well worth rescuing."
This is a great opera, and IHMO, the finest work by
Alessandro Scarlatti yet recorded. With the singers and players engaged, it could have been a A+ production.
But it isn't, because of René Jacobs, who does his best to turn
everything he touches into a German passion oratorio. The
non-historic organ continuo added by Jacobs in the majority of
movements overpowers arias and slows down recitative. Who else
but Jacobs would insert an organ into an aria starting with
"Agitato" and marked Vivace? I disagree with Anthony Hicks that
Jacobs' numerous cuts were "excusable". With only 3 hours of
music on 3 CDs, there was an hour of unused space -- plenty of
room for a complete performance. Jacobs reduces Act III to a
fragment of less than 43 minutes, dominated by ponderous
recitative. As usual, HM failed to include a full libretto,
covering up Jacobs' undisclosed cuts but depriving the few
customers interested in the text of an unadulterated version. At
least when Jacobs butchers popular works, such as Handel's
Rinaldo and Saul, one can turn to the superior,
historically-inspired alternatives. Unfortunately, there is no
alternative for Scarlatti's Griselda. Furthermore,
the engineers botched the sound balance, making the singers too
loud. CDs:

very slow performance. New for Velardi is the obnoxious,
strumming guitar that spoils many arias. The Spinosi plague
obviously has spread to Italy.
