Giovanni
Battista Bassani. La Morte Delusa (Ferrara 1696). Opus
111 OPS 30-332. (1 CD 2002). Jean Tubéry, director and cornetto,
Ensemble La Fenice. La Pietà: Emanuela Galli, soprano; La Morte:
Daniela del Monaco, soprano; La Gloria: Philippe Jaroussky,
countertenor; La Giustizia: François Piolino, tenor; Lucifero:
Jean-Claude Sarragosse, bass. This is a superb and unique
recording which I highly recommend. The majority of movements
either are accompanied by cornetto or feature ritornellos with
cornetto, which is quite unusual in an oratorio with da capo
arias from the era of Alessandro Scarlatti. The cornetto blends
with the human voice perhaps better than any other obligato
instrument, and the combination of reedless mouthpiece and
chromatic finger holes enable it to play exotic ornamentations
not possible on any other instrument, at least in the hands of
Jean Tubéry. The booklet notes by Barbara Nestola advise that
Bassani composed 13 oratorios, of which four are known to
survive.
