Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Médée. Erato 4509-96558-2. William Christie.
Les Arts Florissants. Hunt, Padmore, Deletré, Zanetti, Salzmann, Daneman, Rime,
Desrocher, Bazola, Károlyi. (1995). Possibly the greatest tragédie- lyrique.
Marc-Antoine Charpentier & Molière. Le Malade Imaginaire. Erato. Marc
Minkowski, Les Musiciens du Louvre. Poulenard, Feldman, Laurens, Fouchécourt,
Ragon, Verschaeve, Deletré, Bindi. (1990) The almost simultaneous Christie
recording on HM is also well worthwhile, although Erato furnished a superior,
facsimile libretto. Neither recording is complete. The 2-CD reissue of
Christie's version includes all of the music but omits the English translation
included in the abridged 1990 1-CD set. Harmonia Mundi presumably cheated their
customers again to prevent a glut of the defective, space-hogging 1990 CDs on
eBay and Amazon marketplace.

Downing
A. Thomas. Aesthetics of Opera in the Ancien Régime:
1647-1785. Cambridge University Press. 320 pages. January
2003. "This is the first study to recognise the broad impact of
opera in early-modern French culture. The author considers the
use of operatic spectacle and music by Louis XIV as a vehicle
for absolutism; the resistance of music to the aesthetic and
political agendas of the time; and the long-term development of
opera in eighteenth-century humanist culture. He argues that
French opera moved away from the politics of the absolute
monarchy in which it originated to address Enlightenment
concerns with sensibility and feeling. The book combines close
readings of significant seventeenth-century and
eighteenth-century operatic works, circumstantial writings and
theoretical works on theatre and opera, together with a measure
of reception history. Thomas examines key works by Lully,
Rameau, and Charpentier, among others, and extends his reach
from the late seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth."
