| François Couperin. L'art de toucher le
clavecin & selected pieces. Zig-Zag Territoires (2 CDs
2004). Blandine Rannou, harpsichord.
Details. "Blandine Rannou 're-orders' the ordres, grouping
after each of the eight preludes of L'Art de toucher le clavecin
a selection of pieces drawn from all four books. This decision
is animated by the wish to present us with 'the pieces that
seemed most suited to reflecting this imaginary sound world -
echoes of Lullian opera, of the lute, of instrumental or vocal
works by François Couperin himself, such as Les Nations or the
Leçons de Ténèbres, that repertoire whose role we acknowledge as
being to touch our hearts.'"

| François Couperin. L'oeuvre de clavecin.
Harmonia Mundi HMX 2901442/52 (12 CDs 1993-95). Christophe
Rousset, with Blandine Rannou in the performances of the 4
Concerts. Includes HMX 2901269, the 1988 recording of works for
two harpsichords with William Christie. Superb performances of
many harpsichordists' favorite music. My preferred alternatives
are the contemporaneous recordings by Olivier Baumont on Erato.
(I haven't heard the new set by Noëlle Spieth.) The sets by
Kenneth Gilbert and Blandine Verlet have been superseded,
although the sound quality of the old analogue LPs is unequaled
by the bandwidth-limited CDs. Rousset consulted with an expert
on baroque dance to help determine appropriate tempos. Performed
on fine antique harpsichords: I: Colmar Ruckers; II:
Couchet-Taskin; III: 17th Century French harpsichord at Villa
Médicus, Rome; IV: Neuchâtel Ruckers.

Couperin. Intégrale de l'oeuvre pour clavecin. Erato
0630-10738-2 (10 CDs, 1992-95). Olivier Baumont, harpsichord,
with Davitt Moroney in works for 2 harpsichords. Very well
recorded. Unlike Rousset, Baumont occasionally deviates from
Couperin's strictly notated ornaments.
