Johann
Sebastian Bach's Tuning by Dr. Bradley P. Lehman - worked out from the
border decoration in Bach's main copy of the Well-Tempered Clavier & why he
believes that
CPE
Bach used the same temperament:
- 1/6 comma fifths F-C-G-D-A-E
- pure fifths E-B-F#-C#
- 1/12 comma fifths C#-G#-D#-A#
- 1/12 comma wide fifth resulting at A#-F

| Psalterion & Fortepiano - From C.P.E. Bach
to Mozart. Ambronay AMY 012 (1 CD, June 2008). Margit
Übellacker, psalterion (dulcimer); Aline Zylberajch, fortepiano
by Monika May
after the earliest Stein. CPE Bach, Sonata Wq 87; Mozart, Adagio
K.266 & Sonata K.305, plus sonatas by Schobert, Melchior Chiesa,
& Eberlin. This superb recording celebrates the pantalon, an
undamped keyboard instrument invented and popularized by
Pantalon Hebenstreit during the 18th Century. Ms. Übellacker's
skill with the hammers comes remarkably close to what would be
possible with a keyboard.

More Recordings
Bach,
CPE. Lieder & Oden. cpo 999 549-2 (1 CD 1998). Klaus
Mertens (baritone) & Ludger Rémy (Martin Skowroneck fortepiano
after Walther). I had not been particularly impressed with CPE
Bach songs I had heard previously, but what a difference this
recording makes. The survey of 21 varied songs from different
periods of his life demonstrates that Emanuel was an overlooked
master of lieder whose work often is on a par with Schubert's,
though composed in earlier styles. The fortepiano sound is rich
and particularly well-recorded.

| Bach, CPE. Magnificat Wq 215 (1749).
Bach, JC. Magnificat T 207/3 (1760) & Tantum ergo
T 209/7 (1759). Capriccio 67 003 (2002). Michael Schneider, La
Stagione Frankfurt, Dresdner Kammerchor. Elisabeth Scholl
(soprano), Ruth Sandhoff (contralto), Andreas Karasiak (tenor),
Gotthold Schwarz (bass). The CPE Bach Magnificat is a familiar
work from pre-HIP days, but it never sounded as exciting as it
does here. Schneider really steps up the pace over the dreary
old recordings. The long soprano aria in the Tantum ergo is of
similar quality to the soprano arias on the superb Emma Kirkby
JC Bach disk. JC Bach's Magnificat parodies his older
half-brother's work at the very beginning, then moves far away
from it in his modern, operatic style.

Sinfonia Wq 177. Vanguard Classics (Passacaille

Fondamento. Of the current select group of CPE Bach disks, this
may be the best, and it may be the best of the fine Passacaille
Collection. Dombrecht has a distinctive sound that is difficult
to explain. Perhaps he plays a bit flatter than some other
hautboy players, but whatever the reason, he blends extremely
well with the polished Flemish baroque orchestra.

From Part II (page 172) [Emphasis added.]:
3. The organ is indispensable in church music with its
fugues, large choruses, and sustained style. It provides
splendor and maintains order.
4. However, in all recitatives and arias in this
style, especially those in which a simple accompaniment permits
free variation on the part of the singer, a harpsichord must
be used. The emptiness of a performance without this
accompanying instrument is, unfortunately, made apparent to us
far too often.
5. It is also used for arias and recitatives in chamber and
theatrical music.
6. The pianoforte and clavichord provide the best
accompaniments in performances that require the most elegant
taste. Some singers, however, prefer the support of the
clavichord or harpsichord to the pianoforte. |

Music
| Quite clean miniature scores of C.P.E. Bach's
Magnificat, Die Israeliten in der Wüste, Die Auferstehung und
Himmelfahrt Jesu and other works, edited by
Gábor Darvas, were published in the Edition Eulenburg
series. The "piano" line is a realized continuo rather than a
piano reduction. |
| Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: The Complete
Works. A new edition is being prepared by the Packard
Humanities Institute (PHI) in collaboration with an
international group of scholars. The chair of the editorial
board is Christopher Hogwood; the executive editors are Darrell
M. Berg (solo keyboard music), Ulrich Leisinger (vocal music),
and Peter Wollny (instrumental music, theoretical works, and
supplements). Paul Corneilson serves as managing editor, and
Dexter Edge is senior editor. Their goal is to complete
publication of approximately 120 volumes in printed and digital
formats by 2014. The project also aims to build a database of
CPE Bach's works, sources, editions, and other documentary
information on his life and music. See "New
Perspectives on the Music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach" by Paul
Corneilson, Society for Eighteenth-Century Music Newsletter,
Issue No. 3, October 2003 (pdf). |
Recovered Music
From "Recovered in Kiev: Bach et al.: A Preliminary Report on the Music
Collection of the Berlin Sing-Akademie" by Christoph Wolff. Notes 58.2
(2001) 259-271:
An unknown thematic catalog of C. P. E. Bach's keyboard works in his
own hand and dated 1772 furnishes much information about their extent
and chronology, also about the composer's destruction of his
compositions from before 1733 because they were "too youthful".
The scores and performance parts of C. P. E. Bach's unpublished
vocal works from the Hamburg period, including twenty Passion settings,
are completely preserved and can finally be prepared for critical
editions.
Unknown in the Bach literature, a bound volume of C. P. E. Bach's
published songs, with numerous original emendations and autograph
revisions, demonstrates the composer's intention of issuing near the end
of his life a new complete edition of his songs.
