David
Charlton. Grétry and the Growth of Opéra-Comique. 371
pages. Cambridge University Press, 1986. Includes detailed
chapters on 24 opéra-comiques by Grétry. The best source I have
found for learning about Grétry and his operas for the
Comédie-Italienne after its merger with the Opéra-Comique. The
stage works performed typically were not comic. They were
distinguished from the operas performed at the Paris Opera by
the anti-competitive terms of the Opéra-Comique's license, which
prohibited sung recitative and the Italian language.
