The International
Opera Foundation Eszterháza - The IOFE hope to reconstruct the 1781
Eszterháza opera house based on detailed, original documentation; resurrect the
original Eszterháza repertoire of nearly 100 operas by Haydn and other
composers; and establish an International Opera Academy where the different
elements of 18th Century opera performances would be researched and taught to
singers, stage directors, designers and scholars.

Joseph
Haydn. Die Klaviersonaten. Capriccio 49 404 (14 CDs
2005).
Details. Christine Schornsheim, harpsichords, clavichord &
fortepianos. Andreas Staier, harpsichord, in the works for two
harpsichords and four hands. All of Haydn's keyboard music,
including fragments. Amazingly low price for this new set, which
was awarded a Diapason d'Or in March. Very favorably reviewed by
Richard Maunder in Early Music Review 107: 26 (June
2005): "In summary, this set is a very fine achievement indeed,
which I will treasure for many years to come." The variety of
instruments and outstanding recording quality make this an
interesting set, well worth the budget price. However, in direct
comparisons I have made of several sonatas, the performances by
Staier on three CDs are clearly preferable. Schornsheim plays
with mechanical precision, in most cases playing the notes
exactly as written. But this is the best complete set of Haydn
sonatas to date on historic instruments, and it is easy to
listen to disk after disk, unlike the disappointing Brilliant
Classics set.

Die Jahreszeiten. Harmonia Mundi HMC 901829/30 (2 CDs,
September 2004); HMC 801829/30 (2 SACDs). René Jacobs,
Freiburger Barockorchester, RIAS Kammerchor. Marlis Petersen,
soprano; Werner Güra, tenor; Dietrich Henschel, bass. This is a
state-of-the-art recording of a superb performance. The Seasons
is my personal favorite among Haydn's late choral works, and
this recording clearly is the finest to date. The fortepiano
continuo in simple recitatives is the best I've heard on disk.

| Haydn. Paris Symphonies (Nos. 82-87).
dhm (3 CDs, March 2005). Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus
Wien. These symphonies don't fit on 2 CDs because Harnoncourt
takes all the repeats. Thus BMG has allowed 3 CDs for the nth
recording of Haydn's Paris Symphonies, but recently butchered
the premiere recording of Handel's Lotario to fit it on 2
CDs to save a few cents per copy.

| Haydn. Cantatas for Eszterháza (1763-64): "Destatevi,

Harmonia Mundi HMC 901765 (1 CD 2002). A 1990 recording of
Symphony No. 12 directed by Nicholas Kraemer was added to bring
the total time close to an hour. Andreas Spering, VokalEnsemble
Köln, Capella Coloniensis. Sunhae Im, soprano; Johanna Stojković,
soprano; Max Ciolek, tenor. Highly recommended! These early
cantatas, apparently strongly influenced by Gluck, represent
some of Haydn's finest vocal music. See pages 463-494 of volume
1 of Landon's Haydn: Chronicle and Works for extensive
musical excerpts. "Se ogni giorno", the long soprano aria in "Qual
dubbio" features a difficult harpsichord obligato with separate
cadenzas for the soprano and harpsichord at the end of the A
section. The engineers did an excellent job of balancing the
harpsichord, singer and orchestra, unlike all recordings I have
heard of Handel's "Vo far guerra" from Rinaldo.

facial expressions do not come through on an audio recording.

| Haydn. Harpsichord Sonatas. Andreas
Staier, fortepiano. These are exceptional recordings with
stylish ornamentation. The best performances on the 10-CD
Brilliant Classics set are no match for Staier's, and some of
the others are unbearably mediocre. I haven't heard Ronald
Brautigam's Haydn sonata series on BIS. Mainstream reviews of
early keyboard recordings frequently are even more poorly
informed and even more misleading than mainstream reviews of
other early music. See, for example, the many reviews over the
years praising the lackluster Haydn series by Lola Odiaga.

| Haydn. Symphonies. Decca / L'Oiseau-Lyre
(Ten 3-CD sets, 1990-2000). Christopher Hogwood, Academy of
Ancient Music. Excellent booklet notes by James Webster
reflecting the latest scholarship at the time of publication. 10
volumes were released before Polygreed pulled the plug on the
series, which must have been profitable though not at the "Three
Tenors" level expected by big record company executives.
Fortunately, Hogwood started at the beginning, providing the
best HIP coverage to date of the early symphonies. All the Haydn
symphonies other than 76-81, which would have been on Hogwood's
volume 11, can be covered nicely by combining Hogwood boxes 1-4
and 7-10 with the 13-CD Brüggen compilation.

Symphonies 76 & 77. Released on 1 CD with BBC Music
Magazine volume 13/9 (2005). Reviewed by Clifford Bartlett
in Early Music Review 107:42-43 (June 2005). |
| Haydn. Symphonies Volume 6: Nos. 76-78.
Hyperion CDA 66525 (1 CD 1991). Roy Goodman, The Hanover Band.
Goodman plays harpsichord continuo, which pretty clearly was not
used by Haydn except in the late London symphonies. Listed until
a better alternative comes along. That leaves only symphonies
79-81 without a recommended recording.
