J.S.
Bach's Ornament Table
J.S. Bach on Shoulder-violoncello by Dmitry Badiarov. Bach's six suites for
violoncello probably were composed for the violoncello da spalla and intended
for the person who performed the sonatas and partitas for solo violin. Mr.
Badiarov built the first modern violoncello da spalla for Sigiswald Kuijken (photo
with instrument), who will be performing the Bach suites in Dorking, UK (and
perhaps elsewhere) in 2007.
Sigiswald Kuijken discusses the violoncello da spalla in an interview with
Brian Robins for Goldberg.
Tip for OVPP fans: If you want to hear great
OVPP choral singing, get Gotthold Schwarz's recording of
Telemann's
Der Tag des Gerichts on Rondeau.

BWV 244. Channel Classics CCS SA 32511 (2 CDs,

Siri Karoline Thornhill, soprano; Tim Mead,
countertenor; Matthew White, countertenor; Evangelist:
Gerd Türk, tenor; Julian Podger, tenor; Charles Daniels,
tenor; Peter Harvey, bass; Sebastian Noack, bass.
Veldhoven describes this performance as an "asymmetrical
one-choir Passion." Coro I is a soloists' choir, and
Coro II is a ripieno group. "Coro I always takes the
lead in the Passion, while Coro II interrupts and offers
commentary. When the two do sing and play together, Coro
II mainly doubles Coro I, as in the final movement of
the first part, O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde gross. At
that moment, the singers and players of Coro II form a
genuine ripieno. Nowhere in the Passion is the music
introduced by Coro II." 8 ripieno singers were added to
soloists in Coro I. Coro II consist of 4 singers.

Fabio Bonizzoni
writes: "Die Kunst der Fuge for me is a

appropriate instrument, I believe. The work presents
several problems since no 'authentic' final stage of it
exists. I have decided to record a version quite close
to the first version of this work – as preserved in an
autograph manuscript – with a few additions involving
the presence of a second harpsichord which is playing in
two of the contrapunti."

J.S. Bach. Das wohltemperierte Clavier Vol. 2. Harmonia
Mundi 907433/34 (2 CDs, May 2010). Richard Egarr, harpsichord by
Joel Katzman after Ruckers. An outstanding recording that I
highly recommend. Richard Egarr writes: "To help contrast
between my recording of WTC I and II, I chose to sue a higher
pitch for the Second Book: a'= 415, as opposed to teh lower a' =
392 for Book One. For those who wish to compare such things, I
also used a slightly heavier voicing of the quill to give the
sound more strength. I also chose to apply Bradley Lehman's
interpretation of Bach's tuning-diagram from WTC I in tuning the
temperament for WTC II."
