Marais Biography - musicologie.org

Marin Marais by Dr. David C.F. Wright

Tableau d'un violiste au Château de Blois by Jonathan Dunford (August 2006). This well-illustrated article demonstrates that the young man with viol in a portrait by Jean Dieu dit Saint Jean formerly believed to be Johan Schenck is in fact Marin Marais and identifies the music manuscript in the painting as an excerpt from Marais's Premier Livre.

French language edition (2 CDs + book, November 2007). US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Marin Marais à l'Orgue. Bayard (1 CD, November 2007). Jean-Paul Lécot, organ. FR
Marin Marais. Pièces de Viole, Book 1, Part 2. Ligia Digital Lidi 0301186-07 (2 CDs, November 2007). Jean-Louis Charbonnier, bass viol; Paul Rousseau, bass viol; Claire Giardelli, bass viol; Mauricio Burgalia, theorbo; Pierre Trocellier, harpsichord. This fine recording completes book 1, leaving only Marais's second book in the ongoing complete edition. The Ligia recordings complement the outstanding 1995 recording by Philippe Pierlot and the Ricercar Consort, as choices of continuo differ in most pieces, and in many cases suites are comprised differently. The recordings also sound quite different due to substantially different room acoustics. Charbonnier will finish the complete edition by recording Marais's book 2 on 5 CDs. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Marin Marais. Les Voix Humaines. dhm 88697071622 (1 CD, September 2007). Hille Perl, viol; Lee Santana, lute. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Marin Marais. Pièces de Viole, Book 1, Part 1 - Suites I, II & IV (1686). Ligia Digital Lidi 0301173-06 (2 CDs, October 2006). Ensemble Marin Marais: Jean-Louis Charbonnier, bass viol; Paul Rousseau, bass viol; Mauricio Burgalia, theorbo; Pierre Trocellier, harpsichord. This outstanding, ongoing series now moves to Ligia from Pierre Verany. The quality of the recording is comparable to the Pierre Verany recordings, but Ligia's liner notes are substandard. Whereas Pierre Verany included complete English translations of the liner notes, on Ligia they are in French only. Basso continuo is varied and omitted on some pieces. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Marin Marais. Pièces de violes inédites, vols. 1 & 2. Accord 476 9483 (2 CDs 2006 (2000-2002)). Jonathan Dunford's liner note with the reissue advises that the cover illustration recently was authenticated as a painting of Marais as a young man. The painting, by Jean Dieu dit Saint Jean (1658-1695), illustrates a page from the manuscript of Marais's first book, which is set out differently from the published work. A Deux Violes Esgales. Jonathan Dunford, bass viol; Sylvia Abramowicz, bass viol; Benjamin Perrot, theorbo & guitar; Laurent Stewart, harpsichord. From the manuscript at the National Library of Scotland (before 1685). UK | DE | FR | JP

Marin Marais. Pièces de Viole, Book 3, Part 1 (1711). Pierre Verany PV704101/02 (2 CDs 2004). Ensemble Marin Marais: Jean-Louis Charbonnier, viol; Paul Rousseau, bass viol and bass violin; Mauricio Burgalia, theorbo; Pierre Trocellier, harpsichord. "The playing is unfussy, free of mannerism, presenting the music with all the necessary technical command, with playing in which the enjoyment of, and insight into the music illuminate every piece." Robert Oliver in Early Music Review 105:28 (February 2005). FR | DE

Marin Marais. Folies d'Espagne - Pièces de violes inédites, vol. 1. Accord 465 946-2 (1 CD 2000). Details. From the sleeve note by Jonathan Dunford: "Some time during the 1670's, while still studying with Sainte Colombe, Marais met another of his students, the Scottish nobleman Harie Maule. To Maule he presented 150 manuscript pieces. Maute took these pages home with him when he returned to Edinburgh. Records indicate their presence in Scotland before 1685, or in other words before Marais' first book was published. The 150 pieces are anything but simple sketches. About two-thirds of them appeared later in Marais' first three Books, published successively in 1686, 1701, and 1711. Somehow however, about forty-five of them, as well as an original version of the celebrated Folies d'Espagne never came to light." A Deux Violes Esgales.
