Benedetto Marcello
Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739)
Recordings
| Benedetto Marcello. Cassandra (Odi, o Troia)
/ Concerto for violin arranged for solo harpsichord by J.S.
Bach, BWV 981.
Aeon AECD 1987 (1 CD, March 2010). Kai Wessel, countertenor. David
Blunden, harpsichord. J.C.F. Bach later set the same Cassandra
libretto for alto, strings and continuo in a galant style, with
mostly accompanied recitative and arioso, but concluding with
two long, da capo arias. An excellent recording by Max et al. is
available on cpo.

Benedetto
Marcello. Joaz (Vienna 1726). ORF 2011382 (2 CDs, June
2008).
Details. Christoph Hammer, Neue Hofkapelle München. Athalia: Maria
Erlacher, soprano; Joaz: Markus Forster, countertenor; Josabet:
Ulrike Hofbauer, soprano; Mathan: Daniel Johannsen, tenor;
Azaria: Martin Bruns, baritone; Joiada: Dominik Wörner, bass.
Libretto by Apostolo Zeno. There are so many musical styles
represented in this work that it sounds like a pasticcio, yet
none of the music is recognizable to me as borrowed. It is
likewise variable in quality, but the best arias are very fine.
Includes a booklet with Italian/German and separate English
librettos that was missing from the first copy I received.

Benedetto
Marcello. Arianna (1727). Chandos Chaconne CHAN 0656(3)
(3 CDs, 2000). Filippo Maria Bressan,
Athestis Chorus,
Academia de li Musici. Arianna: Anna Chierichetti, soprano;
Fedra: Gloria Banditelli, contralto; Teseo: Mirko Guadagnini,
tenor; Bacco: Sergio Foresti, bass; Sileno: Antonio Abete, bass.
Quite an interesting work, with an unusually large number of
choruses and arias for bass. Only a few of the movements sound
as if they might have been composed by Vivaldi.

Books
Eleanor
Selfridge-Field. The Works of Benedetto and Alessandro
Marcello: a Thematic Catalogue. With commentary on the
composers, repertory and sources. Oxford University Press, 1990.
517 pages. This book provides incipits for opening movements
only. Thus, for example, only four incipits are furnished for
Arianna -- for the four movements of the opening sinfonia. A
supplementary thematic catalogue of all known arias, choruses
and other movements by the Marcellos would be quite useful.
