Antonio Mazzoni (Bologna 1717-1785). Aminta (Il Rè Pastore) (Madrid 1756). K617 201 (2 CDs, May 2007). Complete CD booklet (pdf) | German libretto / English translation of Il Rè Pastore (pdf) as set by Mozart. Juan Bautista Otero, Real Compañía Ópera de Cámara. Aminta: Anna-Maria Panzarella, soprano; Tamiri: Celine Ricci, soprano; Elisa: Delphine Gillot, soprano; Agenore: Marina Pardo, mezzo-soprano; Alessandro: Leif Aruhn-Solén, tenor. The first complete recording of an opera directed by Farinelli in Madrid. This is my favorite recent recording of an Italian opera. There are many stylistic similarities to music by composers closely associated with Farinelli when he was a performer, i.e., Hasse, Giacomelli & Riccardo Broschi. Tamiri's virtuoso aria "Di tante sue procelle", written for Teresa Castellini (illustrated in the famous portrait by Amigoni with Farinelli and Metastasio), approaches in difficulty Broschi's "Qual guerriero in campo armato". Highly recommended! UK | FR | DE | JP

Johann Valentin Meder (1649-1719). St. Matthew Passion (Riga 1701). Raumklang RK2506 (1 CD, July 2006). Michael Alexander Willens, Die Kölner Akademie. Nicki Kennedy & Hannah Morrison, sopranos; Dorothee Merkel, contralto; Gerd Türk, tenor; Christian Hilz, bass. This early passion on a wordy libretto consists mainly of recitative and arioso. Most of the short, solo arias are based on chorales, and the choruses are typically brief interjections. The recording is very well done, but I had great difficulty making sense of the libretto with the included German-only texts that are run together without line breaks between parts. After obtaining a copy of the excellent, bi-lingual libretto provided for the BEMF performance in Cambridge, MA last April, I listened again and had a much more positive experience. It's essential to follow the libretto closely to appreciate this work, yet that is impossible with what the record company has provided. US | UK | DE | FR | CA | JP

Johann Georg Conradi (c.1645-1699). Die schöne und getreue Ariadne (Hamburg 1691). cpo 777 073-2 (3 CDs, July 2005). Details. Paul O'Dette & Stephen Stubbs. Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra & Chorus. Ariadne: Karina Gauvin, soprano; Theseus: James Taylor, tenor; Pamphilius: Jan Kobow, tenor; Pasiphae & Venus: Ellen Hargis, soprano; Bacchus & Evanthes: Matthew White, countertenor; Pirithous: Julian Podger, tenor; Minos: Marek Rzepka, bass-baritone; Phedra: Barbara Borden, soprano. The only survivor of nine Hamburg operas by Conradi, Ariadne was staged at the 2003 BEMF. It is an exceptional opera, with more overt Lullian influence than recorded Keiser operas. The quality of the music is comparable to Keiser's Croesus and unquestionably superior to Mattheson's Boris Goudenov, the 2005 BEMF opera production. Unfortunately, as in Boris Goudenov, O'Dette & Stubbs present a PIP performance (Pluckers Inspired Performance), that reconfigures the continuo section from the historical two harpsichords plus theorbos to one infrequent harpsichord, close miked lutes and almost constant guitar, with occasional harp. Without the BEMF's superb historical staging, it's not as easy to forgive the annoying, strumming guitar that intrudes upon many movements. To my knowledge there is absolutely no evidence that the guitar was used as a continuo instrument at the Hamburg Opera. (Or in contemporaneous opera houses in London, Dresden, Venice, Naples, etc.) Just because guitars may have been used in opera houses to accompany dancers, typically by themselves and without other instruments, is no excuse for using them in place of harpsichords or lutes in the continuo section. I recognize that the Average American hates the sound of the harpsichord and likes guitars, but the Average American doesn't attend the BEMF or buy recordings of baroque operas. With HIP continuo and less plucked string bias in the recording, this otherwise excellent production would have received a NewOlde.com award. US | UK | DE | FR | CA | JP
