Recent Recordings

Nicolà Porpora. Il Verbo in Carne. Harmonia Mundi Ibérica? (Forthcoming). Anton Steck, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla.
D. Scarlatti, Roseingrave, Porpora, Hasse, Arne, Veracini, Handel.
Ligia Digital LiDi 0202185-07 (1 CD, October 2007). Details. Includes Vivaldi, concerto RV108 for 2 violins & recorder and concerto RV410 for cello. Jean-Marc Andrieu, direction and recorder, Les Passions & Choeur Éclats. Isabelle Poulenard, soprano; Guillemette Laurens, mezzo-soprano; Étienne Mangot, cello. This disk apparently contains excerpts from Porpora's recently discovered 1744 Vespers for women's choir. It has been reported on the Red Priest MSN group that the Vespers (possibly a complete 2-CD set) will be recorded in 2008 for release on Accord. FR | DE
Porpora & Fiorenza. Notturni per i Defunti. Fuga Libera FUG526. Stefano Demicheli, La Stagione Armonica, Dolce & Tempesta. Monica Piccinini, Romina BassoPorpora & Nicola Fiorenza (c.1700-1764). Notturni per i Defunti. Fuga Libera FUG 526 (1 CD, June 2007). Stefano Demicheli, La Stagione Armonica, Dolce & Tempesta. Monica Piccinini, soprano; Romina Basso, mezzo-soprano. The vocal notturni by Porpora on this disk reflect the modern style of Neapolitan composers born ~30 years later (e.g., Pergolesi) and could not be confused with arias from Porpora's operas and cantatas from the 1720s or Il Gedeone (1737). They are essentially sacred cantatas, comprised of arias (5 soprano, 4 alto), brief choruses, and accompanied recitative. In addition to fine singing in the Porpora works, this disk features exceptional string playing to the two "sinfonias" by Firenza. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Nicolà Porpora. Orlando. K617 177. Juan Bautista Otero, Real Compañía Ópera de Cámara. Robert Expert, Betsabée Haas, Olga PitarchNicolà Porpora. Angelica (marketed as Orlando). Serenata, Naples 1720. K617 177 (2 CDs, November 2005, plus an unwanted DVD with video excerpts from modern stagings of Angelica (which wasn't staged in 1720) and the group's prior productions of Martín y Soler's Ifigenia in Aulide & cantatas by Mariana Martínez.) Juan Bautista Otero, Real Compañía Ópera de Cámara (original instruments). Details (en español). Orlando: Robert Expert, countertenor; Angelica: Betsabée Haas, soprano; Medoro: Olga Pitarch, soprano. Libretto by Metastasio & operatic debut of Farinelli as Tirsi. Heavily cut to fit on 2 CDs, with arias rearranged by the arrogant conductor who obviously thinks he knows better than Metastasio how to write a libretto. Three characters, including Tirsi, were eliminated from this corrupt production although it was staged in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Farinelli! Nevertheless, this is nicely performed and recorded and well worthwhile. Only Italian and French versions of the libretto are included, while much space is wasted on four-language versions of useless filler and stock photos. This is a textbook example of how not to package an opera recording. US | UK | DE | FR | CA | JP
Handel, Lotti, Albinoni, Porpora & Alessandro Scarlatti. Arias for Senesino. Decca 4756569 (1 CD, September 2005). Andreas Scholl, countertenor. Ottavio Dantone, Accademia Bizantina. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Vivaldi, Albinoni, Porta & possibly Porpora & Biffi. Andromeda liberata (1726). DG-Archiv 477 098-2 (2 CDs, October 2004). Details. A pasticcio serenata. Michael Talbot believes that Vivaldi's only contribution was the aria "Sovvente il sole". He "would assign Andromeda's arias to Porta, Meliso's arias, the choruses and the Sinfonia to Porpora (who may have used the tradition of his native city, Naples, in calling the hunting horns trombe), Daliso's arias to Biffi (with less certainty, however), Cassiope's arias, Perseo's other aria and perhaps Andromeda and Perseo's duet to Albinoni." Goldberg Magazine interview, page 2. Outstanding recording! Andrea Marcon, Venice Baroque Orchestra. La Stagione Armonica, Sergio Balestracci, director. Andromeda: Simone Kermes, soprano; Cassiope: Katerina Beranova, soprano; Melise: Anna Bonitatibus, contralto; Perseo: Max Emanuel Cencic, countertenor; Daliso: Mark Tucker, tenor. Gedeone: Kai Wessel, countertenor; Ioas: Ulf Bästlein, bass; Sichemi: Linda Perillo, soprano; Fara: Henning Voss, countertenor; Oreb: Jörg Waschinski, sopranist; Silve: Johannes Chum, tenor. This is a fine performance and recording of an oratorio that deserves more recognition than it has ever received. US | UK | DE | FR | CA

Arias by Hasse, Porpora, Giacomelli & Riccardo Broschi. One aria, Giacomelli's "Quell'usignolo che innamorato", was performed with the ornaments and cadenzas written out by Farinelli, and the others with ornamentation and cadenzas after Hiller (1778) (six ornamented arias) and Hiller (1780) (instructions for ornamented musical singing). There is also a brief concerto by Galuppi. The booklet includes interesting, original articles by Reinhard Strohm and René Jacobs. US | UK | DE | FR | CA
