| Henry Purcell. Dido & Aeneas / Pavanne in g,
Z. 752. Sony SK 62993 (1 CD) (Reissue of BBC MM129, 1994).
Andrew Parrott, The Taverner Consort. Dido: Emily van Evera,
Belinda: Janet Lax, Sorceress: Haden Andrews, Second Woman:
Hanne Mari Orbaek, Aeneas: Ben Parry, Kate Eckersley, Lucie
Skeaping, Sara Stowe, Douglas Wootton. Parrott's
1981 recording on Chandos with Emma Kirkby as Dido is a
classic and well worth having for Emma's performance alone, but
great strides in early music performance and Purcell scholarship
are reflected in Parrott's second recording.

Giovanni
Battista Draghi (c.1640-1708) & John Blow. Odes to Saint
Cecilia. Hyperion CDA 66770 (1 CD 1995).
Details. Peter Holman & Richard Wistreich, The Parley of
Instruments & The Playford Consort. Suzie Le Blanc, soprano;
Michael Chance, countertenor; Joseph Cornwell, tenor; Richard
Wistreich, bass (Draghi); Jozic Koc, bass (Blow). An essential
recording for Draghi's 1687 ode, the only major work composed in
England during Purcell's life that is comparable in quality to
Purcell's finest compositions. It clearly influenced Purcell's
subsequent work. Holman writes in the sleeve notes "Purcell and
Blow used Draghi's five-part string-writing in the court odes
they wrote in 1689-90, and began to introduce trumpets into
their orchestra at the same time. Similarly, Draghi's
astonishing setting of 'What passion cannot Musick raise and
quell!' left its mark on pieces such as 'Tis Nature's voice' in
Hail, bright Cecilia, just as his grand Italianate
choruses inspired Purcell to abandon the light dance-like
choral-writing of his earlier odes."
