Telemann. Kapitänsmusik 1738. cpo 777 386-2 (2 CDs, January 2011). Hermann Max, Rheinische Kantorei, Das Kleine Konzert. Veronika Winter, soprano; Cornelia Samuelis, soprano; Jan Kobow, tenor; Immo Schröder, tenor; Ekkehard Abele, bass; Gregor Finke, bass. Outstanding music, performances and recording. Highly recommended! In Kapitänsmusik, for the annual festive banquet for the officer corps of the Hamburg civic guard, an oratorio was paired with a serenata. However, the 1738 "oratorio" in both text and music is essentially a serenata with the closing chorale "Now thank we all our God". The named characters are Hammonia - Hamburg (Winter), Die Andacht - Devotion (Samuelis), Das Vertrauen - Trust (tenor), Die Unachtsamkeit - Negligence (tenor), Die Warheit - Truth (bass), & Die Gerechtigkeit - Justice (bass). (The liner notes fail to indicate the singers' role assignments.) There are several movements with soloists and chorus, a galant aria for soprano, a chorus that begins like a Lullian passacaille, a pastoral soprano aria with recorders, a quartet of Devotion, Trust, Truth & Justice, and a comic aria for Negligence. The named characters in the serenata are Der Friede - Peace (Winter), Der Schutzgeist Deutschlands - Germany's Guardian Spirit (Samuelis), Die Elbe (tenor), Die Zaghaftigkeit - Timidity (tenor), Der Kreigsgeist - Spirit of War (bass), and Der Neid - Envy (bass). It features choral movements with piccolos and field drum which at times sound like Rameau, difficult galant arias, a 6/8 pastoral aria, "Scäfer stellt die Freuden ein" that sounds somewhat like "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd", and a comic aria for Timidity "Hide the provisions, bury the teasure".

Telemann. Die Tageszeiten TVWV 20:39 (1757)/ Nun danket alle Gott TVWV 1:1166. Carus 83.439 (1 CD, January 2010). Fritz Näf, L'arpa festante, Basler Madrigalisten. Monika Mauch, soprano; Gerhild Romberger, contralto; Hans Jörg Mammel, tenor; Gotthold Schwarz, bass. While the 1991 Max recording of Die Tageszeiten was certainly adequate, this fine new version clearly surpasses it. Die Tageszeiten is comprised of four cantatas for the four times of the day, morning, noon, evening and night, for soprano with trumpet, alto with viola da gamba, tenor with 2 flutes & bass with 2 oboes & bassoon respectively. The festive work, Nun danket alle Gott, which I had not heard previously, is scored for trumpets and horns. There is only one surviving copy which does not indicate the date of composition (probably early) or the occasion for which it was composed. Both the performance and recording are excellent. Telemann. "O woe! O woe! My canary is dead!" - Secular cantatas and orchestral suites. Accent ACC 24199 (1 CD, January 2010). Ewald Demeyere, Bach Concentus. Dorothee Mields, soprano. Vinciane Baudhuin, oboe. The recording of the suites is exceptional. In the cantatas, the soloist sounds more reverberant than the orchestra. It's a fine performance nonetheless of two previously unrecorded secular cantatas. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Telemann. Six Cantatas 1731 (TVWV 20 Nr. 17-22). cpo 777 297-2 (1 CD, September 2009). Ludger Rémy, Les Amis de Philippe. Maria Jonas, soprano; Klaus Mertens, baritone. This set of cantatas contains some of Telemann's finest arias. Unlike later sets of "moral cantatas", they all have orchestral accompaniment. Stylistically, they are analogous to J.S. Bach's secular cantatas. They made a strong impression on Agricola, later a pupil of Bach, who wrote that they "gave me ... an idea of how vocal pieces, when they are to be beautiful, must be organized." The two fine soprano arias in the third cantata were borrowed from the 1724 Kapitänsmusik, also recorded recently by Rémy. Here he takes the first aria much slower than in the Kapitänsmusik recording, then cuts the da capo repeat. The fourth cantata (for baritone) contains the only aria known to survive from the lost opera Margaretha and an aria from the 1730 Kapitänsmusik. Recommended, with my usual reservation about the excessive organ continuo found in nearly all German performances. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Brigitte Christensen, soprano; Lydia Teuscher, soprano; Marie-Claude Chappuis, mezzo-soprano; Donát Havár, tenor; Daniel Behle, tenor; Johannes Weisser, baritone. Scathing review by Brian Clark in EMR 130: 39 (May 2009): "Subjugated to the cult of the conductor"; arias cut from the climax of the work; "solo voices too big for my taste"; etc. Fortunately, the complete recording of this, the greatest of the Brockes Passions, by McGegan on Hungaroton is excellent. This collection of 79 secular songs, many humorous, by popular German poets including Brockes was sold by subscription shortly after Der Getreue Music-Meister and is of similarly high quality. It also was and still is a valuable source for learning figured bass accompaniment, as Telemann wrote out suggested right hand chords as well as providing detailed instructions with each song. Telemann. Pastorelle en musique (Opera / Serenata, 1704). Capriccio 71 054/55 (2 CDs, September 2005). Kirill Karabits, Capella Leopoldina. Celiste: Doerthe Maria Sandmann, soprano; Iris: Bernarda Fink, contralto; Amynthas: Lydia Vierlinger, contralto; Knirfix: Bernhard Berchtold, tenor; Damon: Mathias Hausmann, bass. The first recording of Telemann's earliest surviving opera, which is based on Molière. Favorably reviewed in the December 2005 issue of Early Music Review by Brian Clark, who is to be commended for condemning Capriccio's current practice of superimposing tiny type in the libretto over black-and-white background images of the cover graphics, rendering it completely unreadable by those of us over 45. Telemann. Der Geduldige Socrates - Hungaroton SLPD 12957/61 (5 LPs) & HCD 12957/60 (4 CDs 1987). Details. Nicolas McGegan, Capella Savaria. Socrates: József Gregor, Rodisette: Éva Vámossy, Edronica: Katlalin Farkas, Xantippe: Éva Bártfai-Barta, Amitta: Júlia Pászthy, Melito: Guy de Mer, Antippo: Paul Esswood, Nicia: István Gáti, Aristophanes: Gábor Kállay, Pitho: Martin Kleitmann. Based on a 17th Century Italian libretto, mostly translated into German, with additions, this opera was a showcase for Telemann when he joined the Hamburg Opera. See my comments under Damon. There probably is more diversity of musical style in Socrates than in the life work of Handel, with French dances, comic duos and arias, ie "Ein Mädchen und ein Gläschen Wein", and serious Italian arias. At the same time, Telemann regularly set traditional Lutheran chorales in his sacred works. US | UK | DE | FR | CA | JP
Telemann. Damon - Der neumodische Liebhaber Damon oder Die Satyrn in Arkadien (The Newfangled Lover Damon or The Satyrs in Arcadia) - cpo 999 429-2 (3 CDs 1997). Michael Schneider, La Stagione Frankfurt. Tyrsis: Mechthild Georg, Mirtilla: Ann Monoyios, Elpina: Camille van Lunen, Laurindo: Gotthold Schwarz, Ergasto: Carl-Christof Gebhardt, Damon: Michael Schopper, Hippo: Erik Biegel, Nigella: Stefanie Smits. This is one of my favorite recordings -- a winner in every major respect: quality of music, performance, and recording. There are much greater and readily apparent differences between Damon and Socrates than between any two Handel operas. Handel borrowed relentlessly, particularly later in his career, but he reworked borrowed ideas in his characteristic style. Telemann, on the other hand, composed French music that might have been composed by a French composer, and Italian music that might have been composed by an Italian. He seems to have borrowed styles of composition rather than musical phrases. Thus, for example, Damon begins with a violin concerto. The first and second movements seem heavily influenced by Vivaldi's L'Estro Armonico, but the third movement is a minuet that sounds like Handel, interrupted by a more purely French bourée, and ending with a reprise of the minuet. While Socrates is dominated by duos of both comic and serious characters singing a third apart, there are few if any duos in Damon. Furthermore, the principal character, a bass in both operas, is serious in Socrates and comic in Damon, and this is communicated clearly through the music as well as the words. US | UK | DE | FR | CA
