Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745)

Zelenka was the most important Bohemian composer before Gluck. He wrote no operas and few instrumental works, but a great body of sacred music for the Catholic court at Dresden plus a few choice secular works. His music is characterized by passus duriusculus -- chromatic descent. Another distinguishing characteristic is slow triplets -- not infrequently used by Zelenka, though rarely heard in the works of better known late baroque composers.

Zelenka. Gesù al Calvario (ZWV 62, 1735). Capriccio 10 887/88 (2 CDs 2001). Hermann Max. Das Kleine Konzert. Rheinische Kantorei. Gesù: David Cordier, countertenor; Maria Virgine: Ingrid Schmithüsen, soprano; Maria Maddalena: Larissa Malikowa, soprano; Maria Cleofe: Lena Susanne Norin, contralto; San Giovanni: Kai Wessel, countertenor. Recommended. (Also recommended by Johan van Veen.) The mixture of styles suggests a pasticcio. Some arias could easily be mistaken for compositions of Hasse and may have been been written (or borrowed?) to please the singers, while other movements sound like Fux, and the choral movements are reminiscent of Handel in Italy. There were solo roles for all five castrati engaged by the Court, the most famous of whom was Domenico Annibali (San Giovanni), who appeared in nearly all of Hasse's Dresden operas as well as three Handel operas in London in 1736. The 1730 annual letter from the Dresden Jesuits referred to the "highly proficient castrati from Venice, brought here at great expense to the King. This rare and precious music throughout the whole year attracts non-Catholic listeners, especially for the major feasts." (Quoted by Stockigt, p. 72). US | UK | DE | FR | CA

Janice Stockigt. Jan Dismas Zelenka: Bohemian Musician at the Court of Dresden. 376 pages. (Oxford University Press 2000). [The first 32 pages are online in pdf.] This is one of the finest composer monographs published to date.
